Secondary Containment Linings

Secondary containment has to hold whatever the primary vessel was holding, for as long as it takes to notice and respond. That means a lining with no seams to fail, low permeance so nothing migrates into the substrate, and chemical resistance matched to the actual stored product — not a generic coating.

Polycoat Products manufactures spray-applied polyurea and hybrid elastomer linings for containment areas, berms, dikes, sumps, trenches and tank exteriors. All are 100% solids and cure fast enough to return a containment area to service quickly.

Selecting a Containment Lining

The deciding factor is usually the chemistry being contained, then whether the area is exposed to sunlight, then abrasion.

System Type Select it for
Polyeuro® 8245 Spray polyurethane polyurea Acid and base environments. Excellent acid and base resistance, and an extremely low permeance rate.
Polyeuro® 5502 Aromatic spray polyurea The general-purpose containment lining. Good chemical resistance, meets USDA criteria, zero VOC.
Polyeuro® 5602 Aromatic spray polyurea Where a low permeance rate is the priority. Coats carbon or mild steel without primer on properly prepared surfaces.
Polyeuro® 5901 Aromatic spray polyurea Low permeance rate with excellent color retention. Coats most metals without primer.
Polyeuro® 7502 Aliphatic spray polyurea Sun-exposed containment. Aliphatic chemistry with excellent color retention.
Polyeuro® 5502 FG Aromatic spray polyurea Food Grade formulation.
Polyeuro® 1050H Spray polyurea Containment in contact with potable water — NSF-61 approved. Also abrasion and impact resistant.
TuffShield® 801 Spray elastomer Superior hydrocarbon resistance, with excellent tensile and tear resistance.
TuffShield® II HAR Spray elastomer High Abrasion Resistance. Exceptional abrasion resistance and hydrolytic stability, high tear and impact resistance.

Why Spray Polyurea for Containment

  • Seamless. No joints, laps or welds to become the failure point.
  • Coats steel without primer. Several grades bond to carbon or mild steel directly on properly prepared surfaces.
  • Installed with or without reinforcement in transitional areas.
  • Zero VOC at 100% solids, and grades that meet USDA criteria.
  • Low temperature flexibility and excellent thermal stability for outdoor containment.

Typical Containment Applications

  • Secondary containment areas and berms
  • Refineries and chemical plants
  • Fertilizer plants
  • Landfill containment
  • Paper and pulp mills
  • Power plants and pen stocks
  • Food-processing and cold-storage facilities
  • Mining operations

Matching the Lining to the Chemistry

Chemical resistance is specific to the stored product, temperature and exposure time. Chemical resistance charts for the Polyeuro® and TuffShield® ranges are available in our Resources library, and our technical service team can review the containment schedule and recommend a system.

Polycoat Products has manufactured polyurethane and polyurea systems since 1979 from ISO-certified facilities in California and Texas.
